Locals and Visitors from across the world descend on the Lanna Kingdom of Chiang Mai each year to see over 10000 Floating Sky Lanterns released in unison to signify bad luck floating away.
Tips And Information About The Yi Peng Festival In Chiang Mai
-This mass release of lanterns takes place 'behind' Mae Jo University in Chiang MAi Thailand. Not in the university grounds itself.
- Because it is a Buddhist celebration, you are required to wear suitable clothing. Cover shoulders and legs modestly.
- Don't Buy any Sky Lanterns until you are inside the ceremony grounds. They will confiscate any lantern that was purchased before hand.
- Entrance to the festival is free and the main chanting started around 6pm.
- When the lantern release is over, the human traffic and vehicle build up leaving the area is crazy. Hang around until the majority of the crowds have left and you'll also get to see the monks release their lanterns too.
Enjoy the Festival!
