Since 1998, Cape Town has received accolades from the international community for being considered one of the world’s best tourist destinations.
As a Capetonian, I can attest to that. Some people might say that’s being somewhat bias but the truth is; depending on where you’re standing, Cape Town can be whatever you want it to be.
Versatility is one of its most prized characteristics.
It’s the reason why so many people from different parts of the world fall in love with her.
If you’re travelling to Cape Town for the first time, be sure to find yourself a central location to call your temporary home. For the most part, unique home-style accommodations much like Jambo Guest House can offer you that incomparable experience. You want to immerse yourself in the local culture while learning about this beautiful city at the same time.
Why Cape Town is Considered the World’s Best Tourist Destination
The best way to truly learn about the culture of Cape Town is to try some of the local foods. There are restaurants all over the city that specialise in popular local foods. The Gatsby (pictured above) is considered one of the most popular and cheap take-out food in Cape Town. While you can choose whatever topping you prefer, the locals enjoy a “full house” Gatsby shared in four parts. This meal is best enjoyed with friends and cold beer. Take a walk to Mariams Kitchen in central Cape Town and tuck into one of these favourites.
Many might not know about it but for those who love the Labia Theatre it’s become one of the best sources of entertainment for those who enjoy alternative art films. The Labia Theatre is the oldest Independent Art-Repertory Cinema in South Africa. You can expect foreign films, historical cinema and other alternative and art circuit films. And the best part is that admission prices are considerably reasonable.
Cape Town boasts a flourishing community of unconventional and alternative creative culture that has taken over the social scene by storm. Craft restaurants and boutiques can be found on almost every corner.
Fynbos, a variety of mountain passes, hiking trails and beaches. All of this can be found within a walking distance of each other in Cape Town. This is one of the reasons why Cape Town is such a popular tourist destination.
The best and most talked about reason that makes Cape Town so unique is definitely the diverse population. At every turn you’ll find a different community freely expressing their culture and beliefs. And fortunately for us, they are more than happy to share it with you through food, music and art. From the Cape Malays in Bo-Kaap to the Zambian foreign national with their handmade wooden art works at the local street market.
