Romanians know how to eat well! Romanian food itself is delicious and homey, usually served in big portions.
But, Bucharest is a big city with a variety of places to eat.
I want to show you my favorites -- places that should not be missed when visiting.
Caru' cu bere
Roughly translated to the "beer cart", it has amazing traditional Romanian meals. Located in Piata Unirii, in the heart of Bucharest's old town, it should not to be missed. Their "ciorbã de fasole cu carne afumatã servitã în pitã" (bean soup with bacon in bread) is exquisitely delicious topped with "Dovlecei umpluþi cu carne, serviþi cu smântânã" (zuccini with meat and cream). It will make you wonder why you have never tasted Romanian food before. Theihomemade beer is light and a great complement to the meal. Make sure to end your meal with the famous Romanian dessert "papanasi" (donuts with cream and jam).
If you are in a group of more than 2 people, I recommend you make reservations since it gets very crowded during meal hours.
Hanul lui Manuc
The former "Manuc's Inn" is now a beautiful place that is also home to two types of restaurants. One serves traditional Romanian food while the other serves amazing Lebanese food. The Lebanese food is worth a try. Their mixed grill provides a selection of grilled meat. And the hummus is simply amazing. In the summer, enjoy your food in the open courtyard if you prefer.
The inn is located in the Bucharest old town, which is perfect when you are in the center.
La mama is filled with dishes your "mama" would probably make for you. It's so homey and delicious! The restaurants can be found nearly every where in Bucharest like in the old town, near Piata Universitatii (University Square), at Carrefour Orhideea, and some other places in Bucharest. My favorite dish is probably their chicken breast schnitzel with rosemary potatoes, gulped down with a refreshing ice tea or lemonade. Feels like home!
If you enjoy Indian food, try Haveli. Haveli is situated near Obor and serves delicious food. Try their mushroom mutton, which has a wonderful taste of different spices. Their garlic naan bread is also nice. Do ask for a reservation beforehand if you're coming with a large group. Also, if you're not into spicy food, ask them to go light on the spices for you.
