Jamaica is a beautiful country, with amazing people and food!
Two of my favorite things to do on vacation are meeting local people and eating amazing local treats!
In this post, I will give you my top 5 things to do while visiting this great country!
(Please note, I will be talking about Montego Bay area, Ochos Rios & Negril).
#1. EAT JERK!!
I can't say enough about the flavours in this country! I have been to many carribean countries where the food is good, but there is something missing... in Jamaica, the only thing missing is a warning lable for the foreigners like me who have a low tolerance for spicy flavors!
The chicken, the pork and even the fish are amazingly prepared and don't need to add anything, but if you like spice, might I recommend the Hell Fire Sauce (usually a yellow colour).
If you like it spicy, but don't want your mouth to feel like it's on fire for hours after you eat, stick with the jerk sauce, spicy levels depend on who's making it so be sure to ask before you cover your meal! And lastly, if you're a puss like me, who can't handle the heat! Stick with the sweet sauce, it reminded me of gravy!!
Go to the Ulitimate Jerk Centre in Runaway Bay if you are passing through, it was DELICIOUS!!!!
#2. See a Sunset!
We stayed in between Montego Bay and Ochos Rios, so the type of sunsets we were getting weren't great!
We then found a driver to take us to Negril, it was about a 3 hour journey one way, but it was worth every minute! I don't get to see sunsets like this where I live!
The sun appears to melt away into the ocean! Ensure to have a Margarita or a Red Stripe while watching, it makes the experience that much better!
Check out Rick's Cafe! It's not over-priced but it does offer a great view for the sunset as well, if you are adventurous, you might want to jump off the cliffs into the ocean to cool off!!
#3. Dunn's River Falls...
To be honest, I wasn't sure what to expect when we decided to head to the falls. My parents had gone over 20 years ago and I had to see it for myself.
It's a beautiful place, but if you are looking to exerience real nature, I hate to break it to you, it's unfortunately a tourist trap.
I don't know how the falls stay as beautiful as they do with the amount of tourists they allow to climb them at once. It was really fun, and I would recommend it to anyone who goes to Jamaica, but be aware, you will be surrounded by hundreds of tourists, many of them have just steped off a cruise ship for their one day stop!
I don't want to deter anyone from visiting this area, but I do want people to be aware of what you are getting into. Again, I loved my time there, but there was just a lot more people around than I expected!
#4. Spirit of Jamaica tours!
This I would recommend to any adult who isn't offended or fears being around "the ganja" (as my mother puts it).
If you have a chance to visit Bob Marley's mosoleum, its a great little piece of history but if you don't like being around "the ganja" you may feel uncomfortable on this tour.
I never once felt pressure to smoke or purchase anything, nor did I feel scared for my safety being around a drug that is illigal.
The people of Jamaica are good people, and they just want to ensure everyone has a great time!
#5. Go to Jamaica Mon!!!
As I finish this post, I just want to recommend Jamaica as a fantastic destination to relax, see some sights, be one with nature, have one too many drinks and eat a lot of amazing food! Just go!!
Enjoy mon, as erry'tings irie!
