Rose bedded gardens. White latticed patios. Friendly people. There is so much beauty to be found in the little town of Montagu along the famous Route 62 in the Western Cape.

While Montagu is best known for its spectacular mountain scenery, vineyards, and hot springs, there is plenty more to do during a lazy weekend in Montagu.

 

1. Montagu Springs

Montagu Springs is tucked away between mountains and vineyards, and allures visitors with the promise of steaming mineral pools. The resort has hot, cold, and kiddies’ pools, as well as tennis courts, picnic spots, a jungle gym, and pedal bikes and bicycles for hire. Keep an eye out for the resident peacocks and dassies! Day visitors are welcome at Avalon Springs.

2. Montagu Dried Fruit and Nuts Factory

Pick up some snacks for the ride home at Montagu Dried Fruit and Nuts Factory. Enjoy a self-guided tour of the factory and taste some of the products while you’re at it. They also offer daily tractor rides

3. Leidam Bird Sanctuary

Its not often you get to bird watch in the very middle of the town. Leidam Bird Sanctuary has a bird hide where you can grab close up shots of a variety of birds, including herons, egrets, ibis, cormorants, strikes, weavers, and over 50 visiting species. You’ll find colourful posters with full descriptions of the birds inside the hide. Bring your camera and stay as long as you like – it’s free!

4. Montagu Nature Garden

Montagu Nature Garden was created to preserve an indigenous wildflower garden with flora from 3 regions of the Western Cape, namely karoo, fynbos, and renoster veld. The reserve has a 1.7km circular walking trail, benches, and tea garden.

5. African Game Lodge

There is something for the whole family at African Game Lodge. Enjoy guided fossil hikes, morning bushman painting drives, guided walks, cheetah awareness programmes, bird watching, 4x4ing, star gazing, and mountain biking.

6. Montagu Village Market

Euvrard Park, opposite the Tourism Bureau, comes alive with activity on Saturday mornings when it hosts the village market. The stalls are filled with local cheeses, organic goods like eggs, butter, olive oil and vegetables, handcrafted batik clothing, hand-painted tablecloths, jewellery, and wire beading. Pick up something for lunch to enjoy in the park.

7. Protea Farm Tractor Trips

Ascend the Langeberg mountains on a 3-hour tractor ride. The journey meanders through steep mountain pathways, has a fantastic view of the Robertson valley, and stops briefly at the summit. If you're here when the flowers are in bloom, you may even get to pick some proteas on the way down. A potjiekos lunch is served at the bottom.

8. Rock climbing

Montagu is the most developed rock climbing area in the Western Cape with hundreds of routes for all levels of experience. The mountains vary in steepness and as Montagu has very little rain, it has fantastic conditions for climbing.

9. Guano Cave

Guano Cave has all sorts of things for the whole family. Visit Rabbit World with its 6 species of rabbits, chinchilla, anaconda, gerbils, guinea pigs, and birds. There is also a coffee shop, playground, animal petting farm, horse and pony rides, hiking, catch and release fishing, tractor rides, cave tours, and hot and cold swimming pools. A braai area and lapa is available for lunches.
