If you're wanting to capture a glimpse of rural America or see some "Midwestern culture", then the Iowa State Fair is for you.
Held annually in Des Moines, Iowa for 11 days in August, this is one of the biggest and best state fairs in the United States; attracting over 1,000,000 attendees every year. The fair is chock full of the expected livestock and crop displays (we always check out The Fair's Biggest Hog), livestock showing competitions, food contests, concerts and a large midway of rides.
Probably most famous for putting nearly any type of food 'on a stick' (you'd be surprised!) or deep fried, your culinary senses will certainly be tested at this affair.
Coming in a close second place for notorious attractions is the Butter Cow (yep, you guessed it -- a full size scuplture of a cow made entirely of butter).
Definitely a family - oriented event with plenty to see and do. Be prepared for crowds, unique smells and plenty of hot and humid weather!
