I don't want to say that this is New Zealand's best kept secret; but it's New Zealand's best kept secret!
A small piece of idyllic turqouise paradise tucked away in the rolling farmlands, the Blue Springs near Putaruru (Waikato) on the North Island are about 1.5 or so hours from Auckland and under an hour from Rotorua by car- signage is limited but improving and from Putaruru the springs are easy to find.
Simply put, this enchanted spot is absolutely worth visiting.
Arrive earlier in the morning or later in the afternoon to avoid the crowds- the secret is spreading quickly, much to the disappointment of locals who are seeing their previously untouched haven become an increasingly busy tourist stop, with road access rapidly improving making the presence of visitors all the more frequent.
With the spring being the source of some +70% of New Zealand's bottled water- don't worry though this is a non-intrusive operation that simply pipes the water from the spring's underground source- it's definitely as fresh as water gets. Settling at a cool 11 degrees celsius year round, this swim in the crystal clear blue waters is a refreshing shock to all the senses.
Trust me, if you're going to be spending a few days on the North Island you one hundred percent must visit what is quite frankly one of the most beautiful spots I've ever seen!
Thank you nature for being so flawless.
