How to have some extra spending money for your holiday

Whether you're heading to Budapest or Barcelona, flying from Belfast or Bristol, you'll want to save as much money as possible to spend on your holiday in Europe.

If you want a little bit of extra cash in your pocket then book your airport parking in advance - unless you fancy paying double.

Yes, the pay-on-the-day price at some airport car parks can be twice what you'd be charged if you booked in advance. And it takes just a few minutes to search online for a good deal. From Heathrow airport parking to Liverpool airport parking, you'll be able to bag a great deal at most UK airports by booking in advance.

If you're on a budget, the very best deals are usually to be found at what are known as off-airport car parks - car parks which aren't within the airport complex itself, but are located a few miles outside of the grounds. They're almost always cheaper because of their location, even though they may be just a few minutes from the terminal.

Most of them provide a free bus to take their customers to and from the airport 24 hours a day, and the journey shouldn't normally be more than 15 or 20 minutes at the most. You may have to wait a few minutes for the bus though, so make sure you build in enough time when you're planning your journey.

On-airport car parks are within the airport grounds, and are run by the airport itself. Some of them will be within walking distance of the terminal, but at others you'll still need to catch a transfer bus. The closer to the terminal the car park is, the more expensive it will be. But if you can afford to park within walking distance of the terminal, it does make things much easier and quicker - particularly if you've got lots of luggage, are travelling with young children or have a disability.

Many airports also offer Meet and Greet parking, which is the most convenient option of all - a chauffeur parks your car for you. They'll collect it from you outside the terminal, park it for you, and bring it back to the terminal for you when you return from holiday. It will be the most expensive option but again, if you're carrying lots of bags or even just want to treat yourself, airport parking doesn't really get easier than this.

Another option is booking an airport hotel which provides parking while you're away. Hotels often offer packages which include a week or two weeks' parking for not very much more than the price of a room on its own - or of parking on its own.

So not only do you get your airport parking sorted, you get to treat yourself to a night in a lovely hotel - an extra day's holiday, in effect - and a bit more of a lie-in than you would have got if you'd had to get up early to drive to the airport.

Different hotels offer different packages - with some, you'll park in an airport car park, with others you'll just leave your car at the hotel while you're away. These deals are offered on Heathrow hotels, Gatwick Hotels, Manchester airport hotels and many more.

So make sure you have a look around online when you are booking the rest of your holiday for ways that you can save some money to spend on a couple more cocktails!
