Hogenakkal Waterfalls: The ‘Niagara Falls of India’

Hogenakkal is one of the best places to visit near the southern Indian cities of Bangalore and Chennai as part of a 1 day trip.

Here is Everything You Need to Know About South India’s Hogenakkal Falls:

About the Falls

When the River Kaveri enters the Tamil Nadu border after winding its way through Karnataka state, it descends down the lofty landscape forming the Hogenakkal falls.

The name Hogenakkal is derived from two Kannada words ‘hoge’ means smoke and ‘kal’ means rock, because the mist created by water hitting the rocks creates a feeling of smoke emanating from the rocks. The Carbonatite rocks found near the waterfall are considered to be the oldest of its kind in South Asia.

Hogenakkal Falls is a stunning waterfall on the Kaveri River located in Dharmapuri district of Tamil Nadu. Often referred to as the 'Niagara Falls of India', Hogenakkal Waterfalls is one of the breathtaking waterfalls in Tamil Nadu and also one of the best waterfalls in India.

At Hogenakkal, the Kaveri River drops and creates numerous waterfalls as the water cuts through the rocky terrain. Popularly called as Marikottayam by the locals, the falls has about 14 channels with drops varying between 15 & 65 feet

After this point the river spreads out over a wide area of sandy beaches. The water from the fall flows towards the Mettur Dam which is also known as the Stanley Reservoir. To reach the surroundings of waterfalls one needs to take a boat-ride as there is no land access.

Coracle riding is one of the main attractions here which is allowed during the monsoon and winter season.

Coracles, locally known as Parisal, are round boats made of bamboo with the bottoms covered by plastic, with a single paddle. Boating is usually stopped in peak monsoons.

The river water is considered medicinal and hence many tourists prefer to take a bath after a rejuvenating oil massage. Special bathing enclosures have been created for safety while bathing in the waterfall.

Alternately, one can even head out to the sandy beaches for some fun in the moderate currents.  The water is quite challenging. Tourists can also go trekking in the nearby hills.
