Finding a decent place to stay on a budget in New York City can feel a bit like the quest for the Holy Grail.
Reviews of some of the cheaper places leave you reeling with horror, whilst anywhere that looks vaguely decent costs more than your entire holiday budget.
Enter the Loft Hostel, Brooklyn.
Although it’s not on Manhattan Island, this bright, airy hostel is located right by a subway station and is closer to the centre of it all than a lot of places in Manhattan. It takes just minutes to get to Union Square and from there both uptown and downtown sights and attractions are easily accessible. Its location actually makes it a great place to stay; as well as not having the premium price of a Manhattan hostel; it’s in a bohemian, arty area that gives you a real flavour of New York life.
The dorms are huge, with wooden floors and white curtains – simply furnished, but in a way that reflects the area’s spirit. There are two bathrooms to a room and about 8 beds in each, with lockers, dressing tables (don’t know if the boys get those!) and acres of space.
There’s also a garden with a giant inflatable pool and a quirky breakfast room – a very social place in the mornings and there’s a computer room at the top of a spiral staircase. Compared to a hostel I stayed at near the top of Central Park, which was so cramped it was funny (in hindsight), this place is luxurious.
It’s a real hidden gem, so book it now before everyone knows about it!
I can’t believe there’s a better hostel in New York City – price, location, rooms, facilities, it ticks all the right boxes.
