The number of water sports that are available to enthral any adrenaline junkie is numerous, but do you really know them all? Yes, I’m sure you’ve heard of snorkelling, diving and scuba diving, but have you heard of flowboarding?
Here are four epic watersports to try in Abu Dhabi
Always wanted to try surfing but was too terrified of the sea or of the unpredictable nature of the sport? Flowboarding is for those who have always wanted to surf, but in a more controlled environment. Flowboarding can be considered the opposite of surfing because you will be able to see the water rush towards you, as opposed to the waves building behind you like in surfing.
See whether you can overcome your fears and flowboard successfully at Yas Waterworld in Abu Dhabi, for this is one of the few places in the world where Flowboarding is available. Who knows, before you know it you may graduate to taking on those awesome ocean waves soon!
2. JetLev Flying
If you’re staying at an Abu Dhabi luxury hotel, definitely make your way to the Ghantoot Marina and experience JetLev Flying. It is definitely worth the visit! JetLev Flying is only available in Abu Dhabi and involves a carbon fibre backpack that is attached to a hose. The hose is connected to an engine, and when started, the engine pumps water into the hose to propel the person wearing the backpack into the air at high speed. Hires of such jetpacks are usually for 30 minutes which means you can spend up to half an hour pretending that you’re on a rocket. Now, who doesn’t want that?
3. Cableskiing and Monoskiing
Cableskiing is quite similar to waterskiing; except that the boat is absent. Cableskiing involves you being strapped onto a rope which is connected to a raised cable. Expect to be dragged around the waters at around 40km/h. Some feel that even this does not provide them with the challenge and adrenaline rush they need and opt for Monoskiing. Monoskiing involves you on a very narrow board that puts your balancing skills to the test. Lose your footing once, and into the water you go.
Now, this is one water sport that you are likely to have heard of, but it is included here because it’s a sport that allows you to enjoy yourself immensely while also taking in the surroundings of where you are.
If you are in Abu Dhabi, seize the opportunity to kayak to little-known islands off Al Rahba. As numerous companies offer kayaking tours, you will be spoilt for choice. Most tour companies, such as Noukhada and Sea Hawk Watersports will also offer services like mangrove tours which will begin from launch points next to, or behind Eastern Mangroves Hotel & Spa by Anantara. Kayaking in and around mangroves off the coast of Abu Dhabi is undoubtedly going to be a very exciting and interesting way to explore the Persian Gulf.
