Discovering the Jaw Dropping Victoria Falls

Discovering the Jaw Dropping Victoria Falls

One of the most iconic images of Africa, the Victoria Falls is best explored on a Zambia or Zimbabwe safari.

Located in Southern Africa, on the border between Zambia and Zimbabwe and led by the Zambezi River, this is one of the seven natural wonders of the world and a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The magnificent waterfall which is one of the largest in the world, plummets dramatically 108m down into a transverse chasm 1708 metres wide.

The Victoria Falls or Mosi-oa-Tunya (Smoke that Thunders) as it is famously known, draws thousands of tourists each year who come to gaze at its sheer scale and immense beauty.

The Zambezi is in full flood in March and April, forming the largest curtain of falling water in the world. At this time of year, over 500 million litres of water per minute go over the falls creating a mystical spray that can be seen from miles away. On a clear day the spray rises over hundreds of metres whilst the cascading waters create a heart-stopping thunder.

The falls were first discovered by famous Scottish explorer Dr. David Livingstone who named it in honour of his monarch, the reigning Queen Victoria. He described them as ‘Scenes so lovely must be gazed upon by angels in their flight.’

So how can you see this amazing sight for yourself?

On a Zambia or Zimbabwe safari there are many ways from which you can explore the falls and Zambezi River. The Victoria Falls is perfect for safari enthusiasts of all ages with a variety of activities from sunset boast cruises, and bungee jumping to helicopter flights and elephant back safaris.

Choose to take a relaxing sundowner cruise amongst the birds and hippos above the falls where the river flows calmly and you can soak up the stunning scenery. Beside the river you can enjoy riding those amazing elephants, or take a luxury ride on the classic Zambezi train.

If you’re an adrenalin junkie, you’ll love water rafting below the falls or getting drenched from head to toe as you walk across the face of it!

One of the best ways to appreciate the immensity of the falls has to be on a scenic helicopter flight. This way you will get to see each and every unique angle of this majestic sight.  You will be taken up in an open cockpit helicopter for a bird’s eye view of the whole Victoria Falls and Zambezi region – the experience will be indescribable!
