We recently took a camper-van around the South Island of New Zealand.
Apart from a great trip, what struck me was:
a) how it was cheaper than a rental car, yet still performed admirably on the road,
b) how we could stop for a cuppa, sandwich, lunch or whatever, wherever we wanted and this was obviously cheaper than finding a café!
and c) just what fun it was.
We hired a Spaceship (groovy name and true too; lots of room inside, big bed, fridge, storage, extra duvets in winter;-) See www.spaceships.tv
