The Blue City of Jodhpur is one of our favourite destinations for families for many reasons; the magical Mehrangarh Fort, the cornflower blue houses of the old city, the Flying Fox zipline and more.
We especially love the Rajasthan International Folk Festival (RIFF), an annual (family-friendly) music festival held within the fort’s walls.
But where are the best places to stay if travelling with kids?
We round up the best family hotels in Jodhpur to help make your visit to the Blue City truly memorable:
Located in a quiet residential area of Jodhpur is Indrashan, a family-friendly homestay run by Chandrashekhar and his wife Bhavna. This simple guesthouse receives rave reviews from guests, particularly for the stellar service and fantastic food. This is the place to come if you really want to experience life with an Indian family. Chandra and Bhavna have been welcoming guests for over 16 years and are extremely convivial hosts; if there’s a wedding or family gathering happening while you’re staying, you’ll be swept along.
Although Indrashan accepts children of all ages this is really better suited to big kids and teens owing as much to the layout of the house and size of rooms as to the experience itself. That said, Chandra and Bhavna are parents themselves and are very welcoming of all children into their home. Guests of all ages enjoy meals together with the family and other visitors, and many travellers report this being the highlight of their stay.
Indrashan Homestay is located outside the old city, approximately 15-20 minutes from Mehrangarh Fort. It is a similar distance to Jodhpur Airport.
The first boutique hotel to open its grand wooden doors in Jodhpur’s walled city is the elegantly styled RAAS Haveli. This slick hotel sits almost directly below the 15th-century Mehrangarh Fort in the heart of the Brahmin-blue city and commands regal views from every corner, including nearly all the bedrooms.
The hotel is a clever blend of old and newcombining an 18th century haveli with modern-day amenities; a 19th-century pleasure pavilion is today a poolside restaurant and café, the old stables are cosy, cushion-lined sitting areas, and the 300-year-old women’s purdah quarternow hides the spa. The accommodation is stunning and the service is sublime.
And although this stylish hideaway might not appear child-friendly, it’s really a wonderful destination for families with a lovely swimming pool, Mughal-inspired gardens and the hotel’s very own blue autorickshaw for zooming along the narrow lanes of the old city. RAAS also offers a range of kid-friendly activities including treasure hunts and rangolimaking (decorative flower art), and cooking and music lessons.
RAAS Haveli is located within the old city, beneath the Mehrangarh Fort. Jodhpur Airport is approximately 30 minutes away.
We love this family-friendly hotel located on the outskirts of the old city. It’s a charming place, run by the equally delightful Singh family, and is a popular choice with families. The red sandstone mansion dates back to the 1920s and was the original family home. Newer, two-storey additions built in a similar style have been annexed at the back withsun-filled courtyards in the middle. The rooms are warm and cheery, there’s a very good restaurant and a sparkling turquoise swimming pool.
But the biggest selling point here is the service. From the moment that you arrive nothing is too much trouble and Mr Singh goes out of his way to ensure all guests are happy, especially younger guests. There are no dedicated children’s activities but it’s a family-run place where kids are warmly welcomed. Ratan Vilas can organise activities either exploring Jodhpur or the surrounding countryside and these can be tailored for families.
Ratan Vilas is located not far from Jodhpur Junction Railway Station, approximately 15 minutes from Mehrangarh Fort on the old city. Jodhpur Airport is approximately 20 minutes away.
For family-friendly budget accommodation look no further than this value-for-money hotel set away from the hustle and bustle of the old city. Built around pretty manicured gardens, this hotel offers 20 rooms housed within five, two-storey buildings. The rooms, all garden facing, are simply furnished and most enjoy a private veranda or sit-out where you can lounge on daybeds or relax in a rattan chair. At the heart of the property is the swimming pool, the ideal place to relax after a day’s sightseeing. Our one complaint is the restaurant, which is let down by less-than-punctual service, but if you choose to eat outside the hotel then you’re looking at one of the best value family hotels in town.
Kids will have to make their own fun here but with leafy gardens and a lovely pool, they should be able to keep busy! The hotel is also very accommodating with extra beds and family rooms, something of a rarity with more expensive hotels.
Devi Bhawan is located in the southeast of the city, approximately 15 minutes from Mehrangarh Fort. Jodhpur Airport is approximately 20 minutes away.
