The Ashanti Lodge is situated just minutes walk from the main backpacking nightlife street and city centre of Cape Town, South Africa
It is a beautiful, old Victorian mansion with palm fringed balconies, relaxing gardens and a balcony bar overlooking the pool. Security is really tight at the Ashanti, the staff are really helpful and friendly, they have a booking agent within the lodge to take care of all your travel needs and they have frequently organized backpacking parties.
The Ashanti has accommodation needs to suit everyone from dorms, to private rooms, and when we stayed there we even camped in our tent down the side gardens of the lodge. They also have a sister lodge at Green Point which takes you a little closer to the beaches of Cape Town.
The Ashanti was one of our favorite hostel stays in Africa, if not around the world. It was perfectly located, the cost was reasonable, every one was really laid back, the amenities were terrific and we had many a fun night into the wee hours with other backpackers having beers, and much laughter, with views of the majestic Table Mountain to inspire us.
A lot of travelers were working there when we were visiting, as a way to have their accommodation expenses paid for, which made it a very attractive place to stay for many a backpacker.
I unfortunately got really sick with tick bite fever while staying there and the staff could not have done enough to help me. They assisted with getting me medical attention and even allowed me to sleep inside for free, rather than in the uncomfortable tent.
With the upcoming World Cup in South Africa, Cape Town is going to be rocking. It is my favorite city in the world and definitely a cool place to hang out in.
The Ashanti Lodge will put you right in the thick of things and give you a fun, laid back stay. I couldn't recommend it enough.
