American Samoa Flag Day Activities

American Samoa Flag Day is April 17.

The week leading up to Flag Day includes cultural song, dance and music. There is the fautasi, or long boat, race in which boats with crews of 45 rowers race five miles from outside Pago Harbor to a finish line at the inner harbor. Evenings, special performances by youth groups and choirs are colorful and spectacular.


During the festival days food booths serves local specialties. After the official festivities end for the evening, nite life wakes up in several bars and clubs on Tutuila. The party goes on until 2AM every night.

All activities are free for flag day. Round trip fare from Apia is $155US. Hotels are available from $35 a night single to $45 a night double. Bus transportation is cheap $1.00 and will take you anywhere. Towns are safe all times of day and night.


There are kayak rentals at Sadie's By The Sea $10 which gives you the opportunity to explore the harbor and be out on the water with the long boats during practice days.
