Route 66 - Day 1: From Chicago to Springfield

My wife Ali and I are from St Ives in the UK and our dream has always been to ride Route 66!

I entered my dream with Bennetts who are fulfilling biker dreams, never thinking they would pick me, but here we are - right in the middle of the USA, about to start our dream trip!

We woke up to snow for the first day, so we were a bit apprehensive with a slight 'fear of the unknown' - but excited at the same time! We normally ride a Harley 883, but this trip required a bigger bike, with Ali having riding pillion for a long period of time, so we set of on our Electra Glide - a heavy bike but pretty awesome!

We got a sat nav with the bike, but managed to take a few wrong turns trying to get onto Route 66 but we got there in the end! The small towns and villages with their run down dwellings gave us a sense of nostalgia and you can just imagine all those families venturing from coast to coast so many years ago.

I was really looking forward to stopping at the the Standard Oil Gasoline Station in Odell, which used to be a real gas station up untill the mid 60s but is now a small visitor centre. Such a typical American building!

We reached our hotel by dinner time, it's been freezing cold today so we were well up for our first American Diner experience.. Double burger with fries, amazing!

Next stop: St Louis in Missouri.
