I wanted to call this travel diary something different, something more creative, to grab your attention and make you want to read on.
Truth is, I couldn't bring myself to name it due to the very simple fact that no words would do it justice.
Instead, I hope this introduction about myself and my experiences will give you some sort of indication as to what to expect from this diary if you read on.
Im Rikke, a 22 year old who grew up on a farm in Hawkes Bay (New Zealand) and spent her summers at Waimarama Beach and on the lakeside in Kuratau. These places are home to me, and are responsible for the decisions I make in life today. They saw me through an epic few years, and will continue to influence me whevever I go in the world.
I went to a country primary school just down the road from my house, attended high school in Hastings, spent my university years in Dunedin and did a short stint in Auckland working before coming to the realization that it wasn't for me. It was at this point I decided to pack up, book a ticket overseas, and start on the journey of a lifetime.
It exceeded my expectations.
Never in a million years would I have guessed what was in store for me.
I spent the majority of my time traveling the mid-west of America..an epic road trip, if you like, that was a real eye opener in so many different ways. It taught me to breathe, be patient, forgive and reflect..but perhaps the most valuable thing I learnt from the entire experience was to never hesitate and to apply this to all areas in life. After a few months spent hotel hopping every week, I had a month-long holiday, finishing up in Costa Rica.
This was the place that re-ignited my passion for life, art, love, and proved a worthy subject for my photographs and writing. The ocean is where my heart is. It's healing, energizing, and a breath of fresh air. It has a unique power that unfolds me, weeds out my secrets, brings back memories and gets my blood pumping.
Over the next little while I will share with you some of my personal experiences, tips and photographs in hope that you too will get out there and see the world through your own and others' eyes. I will touch on the racism in the mid-west, draw comparisons of living in New Zealand and the states, and share a few life lessons I learnt along the way...
