Bali Without the Tourists: Belitung, Indonesia

Bali Without the Tourists: Belitung, Indonesia

Belitung is located close to the southern Sumatra.

It started to become famous after the local box office movie Laskar Pelangi (The Rainbow Troops) was filmed in the area. As they say, Belitung; the Nation of The Rainbow Troops.

Our accommodation was the Bukit Berahu, which is located right in front of the Bukit Berahu beach. This beach has the softest sand, and the calmest water. It literally looked like a giant pool, so beautiful.

We visited the famed Tanjung Tinggi beach, this beach was popular as it was one of the main locations for the Rainbow Troops filming. The beach is known for its picturesque blue water surrounded with big granites.

We then continued our journey to the east, where we visited the Kwan Im Temple in Manggar, East Belitung. This historical temple was built in 1747 and is a showcase of Buddhist influence in the island. This Chinese temple is located up high on top of a hill. You will be able to see the sea and most part of the city when you are up there.
The day went short and we were back at our cottage in time to catch this beautiful sunset.

Another reason to visit Belitung is, if you are a wildlife enthusiast, Belitung Island has the Batu Mentas conservation for tarsier. Do you know that Tarsier can only be found in the Philippines, Borneo, and Indonesia. Batu Mentas Conservation is located at Jalan Hayati Mahim 07 Tanjungpandan, Belitung. On our visit then, we were able to meet Benji, a 4-year-old tarsier . Benji was tiny, cute, and very shy.

Your trip to Belitung won't be complete without going on a boat for island hopping. From Tanjung Kelayang beach, you can hire a boat for the day for Rp 250,000 and it will take you to five nearby islands. One of the island was the sand island, technically, this is just a pile of sands. You won't be able to see this when the tide is high. However, when you can, you will be greeted by a bunch of starfish; the Prostoreaster nodosus species. Starfish were superstars here, people raced to take them, hold them, take photo with and of them.

If you see postcard from Belitung, chances are you will be likely to find one beach with a lighthouse in it. The famous lighthouse is located in Lengkuas Island. This lighthouse is built in the 1800s during the Dutch colonisation. Find a photo from the top in the gallery.

For anyone looking for a quick beach escape, I would recommend Belitung because not only is it less touristy, but return flight tickets from Jakarta to Belitung are way cheaper than to any other beach destination in the country.
