After seeing Milford Sound, we decided to head south, instead of heading northwest to see more glaciers (like most tourists do).
As we stepped foot onto Antarctic land for the first time I walked away from the group to the other side of this small, penguin-filled rock of land that we were allowed to explore.
A three hour drive south of Christchurch is the town of Oamaru. It's a great jumping off point and place to stay overnight to explore the nearby Moeraki Boulders.

As anybody who has travelled anywhere will know, seeing exotic animals in a zoo or safari park just isn’t the same as seeing them out in their natural habitat, and no animal is this more true of than the comical yet glorious penguin – one of my all-time favourite animals.
