Aldeia Típica de José Franco (Typical Village of José Franco) is unlike any model village you are ever likely to see anywhere else in the world because of the sheer size and scale of the project. José Franco, a Portuguese potter, made it his life’s work, until his death in 2009, to recreate a typical village from the beginning of the 20th century that you would have found in the Mafra region.
It’s a unique place with a working windmill and watermill, houses, shops, traditional workplaces such as a watchmaker and shoemaker, so future generations can learn about what life used to be in that region at that time. It's well worth a visit.
