Sacred Cenote in Chichen-Itza in Mexico - Used for Maya Sacrifices

This sacred cenote at Chichen-Itza in the Riviera Mexico was used for Maya sacrifices.

The remains of more than 100 young Mayans were discovered at the bottom.

A Cenote (from Yucatec Maya) is a deep natural pit, or sinkhole, characteristic of Mexico and Central America, resulting from the collapse of limestone bedrock that exposes groundwater underneath.

Especially associated with the Yucatan Peninsula, and some nearby Caribbean islands, cenotes were sometimes used by the ancient Maya for sacrifical offerings.
