Lago di Varano in Gargano, Puglia, the largest lake in southern Italy, is separated from the Adriatric Sea by just a small strip of land.
During a boat trip on the lake, I saw rows upon rows of these crossed, wooden sticks, which are mussel farms. Underneath each crossed, wooden stick is a line which mussels attach themselves to. Seagulls perch on these sticks, knowing what lies underneath.
