Italian churches are famous for their domes. But this special dome in Rome is just a painted optical illusion.
Can you believe it!
This is the Sant'Ignazio Church in Rome. There are bold Tromp l’oeil paintings in the "dome" at its crossing and in the nave ceiling all produce a festive, sumptuous effect. The dome was never completed due to the church running out of money, so they hired a painter to depict the dome. The church stages the triumph of its dedicatee most effectively.
