Garifuna Junkanu Dance in Belize and the Annual Habinaha Waranagua Dance Contest

The annual "Habinaha Waranagua" dance contest in the Garifuna town of Dangriga, eastern Belize, is part of an effort to preserve and pass on the Garifuna culture's music and dance to younger generations.

It as well as improve the overall quality of the "John Canoe" performances.

The Garinagu people - who are a mix of Carib, Arawak and West African - are one of Belize's main cultural groups, having first settled there in the 1830s, mostly in coastal towns.
