There are several conservation groups in Northern Nicaragua making a big effort to help minimize the poaching of turtle eggs for human consumption.
They do buy the eggs from poachers, but instead of eating them, the eggs are buried in the sand to gestate then are released into the ocean by volunteers.
While this does not dissuade the poachers, it does take many of the eggs off the black market which is a start. We have been told that approximately half of the turtles that are released will survive to reach maturity after 2 years.
One such group, Sea Turtle Rescue Nicaragua in Jiquilillio, is actively looking for donations to help save the turtles!
