If you are looking for a way to spend the day that is both educational and fun, consider visiting one of these great Houston, TX museums:
Children’s Museum of Houston
You and your children can enjoy the hands-on exhibits present at the Children’s Museum of Houston. This museum takes a number of different displays, concepts and resources and makes them kid-friendly and fun. This museum is often considered the second-best children’s museum in the U.S.
Hours: Tuesday – Saturday: 10 am to 6 pm (open until 8 pm on Thursday); Sunday: 12 pm to 6 pm; Closed Monday (except certain holidays and the time between Memorial Day and Labor Day).
Lone Star Flight Museum
If you are looking for something to do while you wait for your flight out of Houston at the end of your stay, the Lone Star Flight Museum is a great choice. It is located at the Galveston International Airport, and features rebuilt aircraft and historic photos.
Hours: Daily 9 am to 5 pm.
Houston Museum of Natural Science
It’s impossible to get through this museum in one day. There are numerous exhibits related to natural science. You can learn about the development of animals and humans, and enjoy special exhibits throughout the year, as well as an IMAX theater, planetarium and butterfly center. The Houston Museum of Natural Science was founded in 1909 and has a rich tradition of interesting and educational displays.
Hours: Monday, Wednesday – Sunday: 9 am to 5 pm; and Tuesday 9 am to 9 pm.
Museum of Fine Arts – Houston
There are more than 300,000 square feet of display space at the Museum of Fine Arts – Houston. This was the first art museum in the state of Texas, opening in 1924. This museum features beautiful gardens in addition to displays of various types of art. Enjoy special exhibitions, as well as gallery talks.
Hours: Tuesday and Wednesday: 10 am to 5 pm; Thursday: 10 am to 9 pm; Friday and Saturday: 10 am to 7 pm; Sunday: 12:15 pm to 7 pm; Closed Monday.
If you are looking for an interesting look at a true battleship, the USS Texas is the place to go. It is moored at the San Jacinto Battleground State Historic Site. The USS Texas was used in World War I and World War II. You can take a hard hat tour of the ship between the months of October and May. Note that advance reservations are required, and those taking the tour must be at least 14 years of age. While you there, take a look around the rest of Historic Site.
San Jacinto Museum of History
Learn about how Texas won its independence with a visit to this museum. Includes a library and park. You can also go during the month of April to enjoy the San Jacinto Festival & Reenactment. Hours:
Daily 9 am to 6 pm.
