A good way to get a nice view (and photo!) of the Halifax skyline, and get a cheap boat ride in as well is to take the ferry from the Halifax water front to downtown Dartmouth ($2.25 each way).
While in Dartmouth you can have a bite to eat and catch some celtic music at the pub Celtic Corner.
If it's a sunny summers day they have a lovely rooftop patio with great views over the harbour as well.
Or if you are in the mood for a cuppa head to Two if By Sea, a popular local cafe, a 5 minute walk up Octerloney Street.
They have amazing croissants (check out the croissant of the week, it is a meal in itself) and a fantastic cup of coffee.
