Maracas Beach - The Best Beach of Trinidad

Click for fullscreen mode

If you ask anyone in Trinidad & Tobago which beach is the best in Trinidad, you will probably get a near unanimous vote for Maracas Beach.

Tobago is a smaller less devoloped island with more pristine beaches. Trinidad is more urban and their coastline is more rugged with rocky shores and mangrove swamps. Swamps and rocky are not the ideal for sunbathers.

On the northern coast of Trinidad, only about a 45 minute drive from the capital of Port of Spain lies Maracas Beach. It is protected in a little cove with low lying jungle foliated hills rising straight up from the beach.

Maracas Beach is far enough away from the capital to make it less crowded and yet close enough to make it fairly easy to visit. Buses do come and go from Port of Spain to Maracas, but the word is they are unreliable and other travelers have recommended car hires, maxi-taxis, and if you are adventurous, renting a car. If you rent a car just be careful as the drive there is treacherous .

Don't forget to try one of the bake and shark sandwiches at the food stands!
