Bull Jumping in Ethiopia

Bull Jumping in Ethiopia

The Hamar are one of the most fascinating tribes living east of the Omo river.

The Hamar are cattle herders and practice agriculture. They are famous for their rituals like the bull jumping.

The event last 3 days.

When it is time for a boy to become a man, he must jump over 10-20 of bulls naked four times without falling.  If he is able to complete this task, he will become a Maza and be able to marry a woman. The women of the tribe provoke the Maza to whip them on their bare backs. This is very painful and causes severe scaring on the women.  The scars are a symbol of devotion to the men and are encourged by the tribe.
